Yikes! Mission Statement??!!

Uncategorized Aug 09, 2018

BORING ALERT!! Just kidding, but mission statements and target customers are the topic today and something we freaking need to talk about more.

I know that for the first really half of my business so like 5 years I didn’t have a clue who my target customer was, and my mission statement I had only written once on my papers for the bank when I originally got my loan. Lol. Some banker way back was like this is total BS, but sure we will give you loads of money to play business with.

Good news is I am not “playing business” and never was, but when I wrote that mission statement I didn’t understand why you had a mission statement- I just knew when I googled how to make a business plan for loan presentation it said I needed one. Then I googled how to write one.  Thank goodness for google.  Remember this is in 2005 and 2006 when I was prepping and planning to open my salon, and salons were not the way they are today. I knew I didn’t want to have some rinky dink business where we ‘did hair’ I wanted a BUSINESS!!!

I knew I wanted a real business, and that it was serious to give a presentation and deliver on it that was appealing to clients, and renters alike.  And I knew I had to keep promising and never violating the agreement I set forward in my business unless it was the only option.  What I know now, is that this was and is how I define my mission statement.

Whenever I had the opportunity to talk about the salon, or people would say “you’re so young… blah blah…how did you do it?” I would always start my answer with “ I knew I wanted to create an environment where women could get great services in a professional yet relaxed, clean and comfortable environment…” and then continue on and generally skirt their questions about my age, because it got old so fast.  And honestly I wanted to say. “Yes, I’m 20. Yes, everyone that works here is older than me, so are you, and the sky is not falling – what is the effing problem?!?!” but I never did. Except maybe one time – to a certain brand (huge brand) rep… but that’s whole other juicy blog post!

My point is, is that your mission statement is what you do and who you are everyday. Just defined by your actions and interactions in your business.  It’s imperative to know what your mission statement is so that you can express to others easily so that they know what you are offering, and so that in turn they can make a decision if they want to be your customer.

Behind the chair my mission statement is that I am a “beauty expert specializing in natural beauty in a relaxed and casual environment” easy peasy. Natural beauty? Doesn’t everyone? Well no, by saying I specialize in natural beauty that indicates I don’t specialize in vivids, and fashion tones, and that I have a more low maintenance clientele, or just those who prefer a more natual look that requires lots of maintenance.

It’s nice to know what you are doing.  I know exactly what I present as a salon, and as an independent stylist behind the chair.  I set the tone by embodying both of these mission statements daily in my actions in person, and online through social interactions.  The main thing to remember is that you should only craft and share your mission statement when you are ready and very sure you can deliver it.  Nothing like violating an agreement you set up to lose you business and credibility.

Here’s 5 questions to help you create your mission statement:

  1. What do you think people currently say about an experience with you?

  1. Define how and what you want others to say about their experience with you in a perfect world, how they feel about the time they spend with you

  1. What problems and solutions do you solve? And for who?

  1. What do you currently say you do when someone asks you what you do for your career?

  1. How and what can you implement without totally overhauling your business in order to reach your “perfect world comments”

Use your answers to craft your very own mission statement, refine and tweak as needed, and then commit it to memory. Put it in your color cabinet, on your phones screensaver, your forehead, everywhere!! Truly live and deliver your mission statement to your clients and guests for clarity, and to attract the best clients for you!!

Adios amiga and happy mission statement-ing!!

p.s. it would be awesome if you already knew who your ideal target customer or market was… there’s a blog post coming soon to help you with that too
